AMG tonearms are a marvel of design, engineering, and execution.

Julian Lorenzi |
Werner Röschlau, commercial pilot and master mechanical engineer, was designing and manufacturing parts for other turntable companies when, in 2011, he decided to design and build a tonearm of his own. This tonearm was the well-received AMG 9W1, which is still in the AMG tonearm line today.
The Analog Manufaktur Germany (AMG) tonearms are unique in several respects. First, they feature Mr. Röschlau’s patented dual-pivot bearing design, which uses spring steel tension rods in the vertical plane, similar to the design of helicopter rotors. This offers ultra-low friction operation, while eliminating the possibility of any bearing chatter or play, as can sometimes occur on traditional gimbal bearings tonearms.
AMG tonearms also have a useful precision bubble level built into the bearing housing and a precision threaded vertical adjustment rod to aid in setting accurate and repeatable vertical tracking angle. In addition, they use a unique magnetic anti-skate system that is more accurate across the entire surface of the record than other systems.
AMG hand winds the high-purity stranded copper internal wiring of all of their tonearms in-house. The parts for all AMG models are precision milled and finished in-house, including their aluminum arm tubes.
The AMG tonearm arm tubes are precisely calculated for the correct diameter-to-length ratio for superior resonance control. All wiring connectors are gold-plated.
The AMG Turbo models add such features as a more massive bearing housing, which increases the overall efficiency of the bearing while further reducing friction and improving resonance control. They also feature thumb-screws built-in for all adjustments, so no tools are necessary to accurately set the Turbo models. Turbo tonearms also come with a 2-piece adjustable headshell plate and alignment tool.
Today, Julian Lorenzi, Werner Röschlau’s son, is the proprietor of the AMG manufacturing facility in Deining, Bavaria, Germany, and it is state-of-the-art in every way. He has been there from the beginning in 2011, and has been involved in the development of all of the AMG products.
Since 2011, AMG has received numerous hi-fi industry awards for their tonearms, and they remain some of the very best on the market, at any price.
