EMT Has A Rich History Of Phono Cartridge Innovation
Founded in 1940 by Wilhelm Franz in Berlin Germany, EMT, then called Elektromesstechnik, began life as a manufacturer of test equipment for broadcast technology.
By 1945 EMT had moved three times to new facilities, and then in 1950 EMT had begun manufacturing turntables, which they sold along with Ortofon phono cartridges. This experience led them to the next step in the company’s evolution in 1956, when their Gerätewerk Lahr (Equipment Factory Lahr) was established under the direction of Wilhelm Franz’s brother, Walter.
EMT’s model 927 and model 930 broadcast turntables had gained a reputation for their quality of design in construction by 1959. Because of the demand for these turntables and for compatible phono cartridges, EMT had begun to build up their capacity to manufacture phono cartridges. They were so successful in this venture that they were building Ortofon cartridges under license in 1959 as well.
In 1960 EMT began development of their soon-to-be successful stereo moving coil pickup, the TSD 15. This model was used in broadcast studios all over the world, and sold in the tens of thousands of units. This design was also produced in mono versions, and is one of the best selling phono pickups of all time.
In the years to follow, EMT was on the cutting edge of stylus shape innovation, the use of magnesium cartridge bodies, and they even built some of the best loved Thorens turntables of the 1960s.
Today, under the leadership of Micha Huber, EMT Tontechnik is still on the cutting edge of technology, and still very much involved in the manufacture of phono cartridges for both domestic and broadcast use, and has manufacturing facilities in both Turbenthal Switzerland and Mahlberg Germany.
In addition to a wide selection of high performance phono cartridges and pickups, EMT also offers a high quality phono preamplifier and a moving coil step-up transformer that are perfectly matched to the EMT cartridges and pickups. They are show below the phono cartridges listings on this web page.
All EMT models feature ALNICO magnets and precision milled bodies. Along with the standard half-inch mount models, EMT also offers their Tondose “broadcast” models in a selection of both stereo and mono versions. EMT Tondose pickup heads on milled from a single piece of magnesium and are available with the choice of standard EMT, Ortofon A, and SME connectors.
Coil windings options are available that will reduce the output of the EMT models, as well as factory rebuild and repair services and a trade-in allowance program.
