Ortofon’s history of innovation in the field of sound reproduction spans nearly one hundred years.
When Ortofon opened its doors for business as Electrical Phono Film Company in 1918, their objective was to develop one of the first available systems to synchronize the sound and moving pictures of film. Their success in this field snowballed into the company developing such products as microphones, dynamic compressors, and oscillographs, and other related products.
In 1946, under the new company name Fonofilm Industri A/S, came the development of the first mono cutterhead that could accurately and successfully reproduce frequencies above 5 kilohertz. This ground-breaking development was followed in 1948 by the introduction of the first moving coil phono cartridge that could reproduce the signals that said cutterhead could record.
The success of these products brought about the formation of a division within Fonofilm Industri A/S in 1951 named Ortofon A/S. The name for this company was derived from the Greek words “orto” and “fon”, which in English appropriately translate as “correct sound.” Thus the Ortofon that we know today was born.
In the decades since then Ortofon has continued to innovate phono cartridge design for both consumers of hi-fi products and for professional disc jockeys. Their product line today includes both moving coil and moving magnet cartridges, with the moving magnet phono cartridges being notable for their replaceable styli. Ortofon also offers a high quality step up transformer, tonearm cables, headshell leads, as well as a comprehensive selection of headshells, along with an excellent test record.
Ortofon is also unique in the fact that they are a foreign high-end audio equipment company that maintains and operates their own office, warehouse, and service facility in the United States. They have done so continuously since 1983. Such is their commitment to providing high quality products and high quality service to their customers.

Ortofon offers a veritable smorgasbord of high quality phono cartridges, covering an incredible range of technical specifications and consumer budgets.
The Ortofon range of phono cartridges starts at a price that is very little more than pocket change for a very solid and truthful performing moving magnet model and continues to an innovative moving coil design that offers true state-of-the-art performance for what is comparatively a moderate price. All along the way there is real value for the audio product consumer at every stop. This value has always been what defines Ortofon and sets them apart from the competition. And this value is not just related to the price of the product. Ortofon offers such convenient product features as replaceable styli in their moving magnet range, to P-Mount cartridges to fit historic and vintage tonearms, to the most extensive and complete range of SPU phono cartridges ever offered anywhere.
All of this adds up to make Ortofon a ‘no-brainer’ choice when shopping for a new phono cartridge for your turntable.
Ortofon moving magnet phono cartridges are the definition of versatility and value.
Available in both standard half-inch mount and P-Mount, and in versions for stereo, mono, and 78 rpm records, Ortofon manufactures a moving magnet phono cartridge to meet every performance need and every budget.

With both high and low output models, and both standard and SPU models, Ortofon offers a moving coil phono cartridge that is a perfect fit for any tonearm and any phono preamplifier.
Since their first one in 1948, Ortofon has introduced close to 100 moving coil phono cartridge models. With each new model Ortofon has continued to refine their design and manufacturing techniques, which has led to continual improvement in musical reproduction. Ortofon’s SPU phono cartridges have also continued to improve in refinement, materials, and design over the years and they are now the preferred choice of those seeking a phono cartridge solution for a vintage application. Many music lovers are also rediscovering the SPU and are using it with their modern turntable setup, in many cases with one of the excellent Ortofon tonearms.
